I compost. Anywhere I live where I have the opportunity to do so, I do. So when I saw the commercial for Sun Chips and their new 100% compostable bag, I was intrigued. Yesterday while buzzing through the supermarket, I saw the new bag was on the shelf. Knowing that it would put me over my budget this week, I decided it was worth it to take the bag for a test spin. I like Sun Chips, and I compost.
So I bought the bag, and as you see in the photo it's now in my compost pile. My approach to composting is the not perfect science that is composting should be, but it works. I use it in my gardens, and people marvel at how nice my garden grows, so I'm doing something right.
Sun Chips has a lot of good information about what's involved in the composting process, they tell their story about their process, and they are making an effort to change the packaging industry for a better solution. I commend them for doing so.
And on another note about composting, if you eat a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables, the best thing you can do is compost them, and you would be surprised at exactly how much one person can generate. I know that I still amaze myself when I have very little trash every week because I recycle and compost.
I will monitoring the progress of this bag composting in my pile. It won't be a perfect composting environment but I know it works. You can read more about the company, Nature Works, LLC, that manufactures the film used for the Sun Chips, and you see a Look Book of products that use their natural-based products for packaging and fibers here. I found the pdf to be more helpful then the Flickr slide show. I will also look for these products in stores. I know I have seen some in my travels, and now I have an incentive to purchase them. After all if the consumer demand isn't there, then the opportunity to change over to these types of packaging disappears.
